Maple Report

September 17th, 2005 Summit

Maple Canyon was great! There was a group of eight of us that went this morning and four went last night.

We first went to the Zen Garden, which got pretty cold, then the Minute Wall, and then the Pipe-Dream Cave. At the cave there were some guys that were pretty good and were working on some of the tougher routes (pictured right.) I was impressed. I only did a 11b. During this climb I ripped a hold off of the wall. Fortunately, Luke was there to save me with a beautiful belay. Caleb also did very well and was able to make it to the top of a 12d with only four falls.

My favorite part was when my wife and I did a really long 180′ pitch at the Thessalonian Buttress. We then just sat there and enjoyed the view of the canyon. There were also a lot of people that were gawking at us. The climb wasn’t very difficult but was at a very high profile for the non-climbers that come to the canyon.

Just remember that next week is the trip to Moab. Come and have fun.

Thanks for reminding me to put the name of the wall in. I couldn’t remember it at the time.

We climbed a route called The Grecian Highway at the Thessalonian Buttress. It is a two pitch climb. P1 is 180′, 5.7, and has around 18 bolts. I didn’t expect that so I had to start skipping every other bolt. P2 is 5.9 and 80′. It looked pretty cool but was ran out of time for the second pitch. It has an awesome view.
