19,340 ft. On the top of AFRICA!!!

Hey everybody!

I just got back yesterday from Africa!  Kilimanjaro was incredible!  If any of you are planning to climb it…which ALL of you should be because it is amazing!…Let me know and I can fill you in and get you the best guide there is!  Kenya and Tanzania are such poor countries.  I was able to do service there which was very much needed, went on some safaris, and had many conversations and interactions with the Maasia people (the really tall ones you see in national geographic with the disfigured ears.)

It sounds like you are all having a blast as well with many great adventures!  Good luck and keep it up!

Devil’s Garden, Arches National Park

the climbing wall.jpg

Some friends and I went to Arches on Saturday and hiked the Devil’s Garden loop along with a bunch of other little trails afterwards. It was a blast! We saw over fourteen arches and lots of other rock formations. It is a great hike to spend lots of time on and see all there is to see along the way. We left Provo at 3am and got down there in time to see the sunrise, and we stayed late to see the sunset from Delicate Arch. The whole day was beautiful.

Provo Canyon Ice

Provo Canyon IceIf anybody ever wants to go ice climbing, Provo Canyon is probably the best place around. Close proximity to Provo, easy access, and overall good quality ice make this a popular place for ice climbers of all skill levels. The lower part of Stairway to Heaven (just before you get to Bridal Veil Falls) is a particular good place for beginners to learn. There are numerous routes that are top-ropeable with only a few ice screws needed (I’m told somewhere there are bolts to anchor off but you might have to do a lot of searching/unpleasant hacking to find them). There are usually several other groups there, so don’t plan on a solitude wilderness experience. Wear a helmet!!!

Bouldering in Little Cottonwood Canyon

For all you Sharma wanna-be’s there’s some pretty sweet boulders up in LCC.  The best thing about bouldering is you can maximize your climbing time because there is no gear to hassle with.  Some of my favorite areas are the gate boulders, and the cabbage patch to just name a few.  You can pretty much go to one or two areas and spend a good chunk of time working on some problems and not get bored. There are tons of boulders for all so you don’t have to wait in line as is common in many areas.  All the rock is granite, so either you’ll love or hate it (as will your fingers will for sure).  Crash Pad highly recommended!!!!!!

Mt. Timpanogos in Winter

I am planning on hiking Timp in a couple of weeks. I have climbed it in the summer and was wondering if someone knew what the best route is in the winter. Also, should I bring the crampons, or are snowshoes satisfactory? Any advice would be welcome. Thanks!Mt. Timpanogos in Winter
