Snowshoeing Tip From Ender3rd

I think you should go snowshoeing past Sundance near the Timp trail head (as long as avalanche conditions are not to high, check here for avalanche conditions). You may also consider Lake Blanche (park 4.25 miles up Big Cottonwood Canyon from the neon sign) or some other trial in Big Cottonwood canyon in SLC valley.

“Subway” the Slot Canyon of Zions

Subway2005 054.jpgYup, it was the subway. I happened to be around on campus during summer of 2005 and it is the best to be in Utah, for the amazing outdoor activities of the state. As an active supporter of the Outdoors Club on campus, I volunteered to lead a few trips (of course unofficial trips).

Anyways Ben expressed interest in one these trips and we went down to Zions, hoping to hike maybe the Narrows (lower part, one without the permit). We left around 3pm and arrived in Zions around 7-8pm and it was still well lit out side. So we drove towards the famous Zion Canyon Tunnel, and did a quick hike on the side. It was awesome. Here is a picture of Ben on a one of the cliffs.

We found a free secret camping ground (secret you know for being part of the BYU outdoors club). I remembered this from a trip with club a few years earlier. It is an awesome camping area next to the river. It was perfect.

We got up early the next day in hopes of getting a permit to hike the narrows. If you remember the snow fall of previous year was record breaking and so even in June the Spring runoff was intense, so the Narrows trails was all washed out. Right when we were about to leave the permits counter, a guy shows to say that he would like to cancel his permits for hiking the Subway Canyon (he is not required to do that). But we jumped at the opportunity and grabbed those permits right there. We did not have wetsuits, so we had to do the hike without having to swim and stuff. So we set out on the trail and first wildlife was a jack-rabbit?.

We had to hike down to river bed and then hike upstream towards the canyon.

Since this trail is by permit only, it was just pristine and untouched. The initial hike upstream was just too rocky. There is no set trail and you have to make your own way through all the rocks. If you remember the previous year’s snow fall was record breaking, hench the spring runoff was intense and the Narrows were closed.
